Camphill Village was founded in 1965 on the farm named “Alpha”. The main reason for this initiative was the provision of a community to take young adults who needed to move on from the Camphill School at Hemel-en-Aarde near Hermanus.

The farm was donated to Camphill, and at first looked very unpromising. The land is “Cape Flats” type soil, basically wind-blown sand layers of varying depth, with clay deposits below. Very little farming was still practiced in the area, and in subsequent years, less and less. Some of the pioneers from that time are still living in the community, both villagers and co-workers. Many are buried in the graveyard of the Village’s Christian Community Chapel. Many co-workers have come and gone, many initiatives in agriculture and enterprise, and the Village has grown in many ways.

The original property had two houses, now there are 17 houses, 7-8 workshops, farm buildings, a large community centre, a health and therapy centre and a chapel.

In spring 1999, a new venture was launched in Camphill Village, Saturday shopping. Every Saturday, anyone is welcome to visit Camphill Village, where you can visit our farm stall, café and also our nursery. A major market is organised for the first Sunday of each month, that is not to be missed. Braaivleis and salads are available and can be ordered if needed. Please note that no alcohol is allowed.
